Junior Netballers make history

The 2013 Caloundra District Netball Association Junior Competition recently hosted Grand Final day with not one, but two Maleny teams participating. This is a huge accomplishment for Maleny Netball Club, which is the smallest club in the competition with four teams. Throughout the session the girls have shown great sporting ability, teamwork and sportsmanship that was rewarded with three of our teams reaching finals.

The U10 division 2 team Blackhawks made history by being the first team from Maleny ever to win a Grand Final. Coach Michelle Heath has trained the girls since they were beginners and has watched them go through the whole season undefeated. They took on Pacific Lutheran College (PLC) in the Grand Final and won 20-6 in a well-played game.

The InterDiv 5 team Phoenix took the harder path to the Grand Final playing first in the semi and preliminary finals. Coming in as the underdogs against Tibro’s, they were slow to get into the game but by the final quarter the girls pulled together and tightened their game play turning the game around in a nail biting and suspense filled final few minutes. The whistle blew and the closing score was 17-16. The girls were triumphant and the supporters held back the tears of joy for a job well done.
